As a nail starts growing inside the skin in a curved way, it leads to swelling, redness, pain, and infections. The symptoms of this condition may vary from mild to severe, depending on the stage of the issue.
The early symptoms include:
- Pain upon pressing the nail
- Tender skin around the ingrown nail
- A build-up of fluid around the nail
If not treated on time, the issue might aggravate, and the nail can become infected. This can, in turn, cause the following symptoms:
- Pus oozing out from the skin surrounding the nail
- Skin overgrowth around the toe
Ingrown nails are usually caused by feet injuries, poor foot hygiene, uncomfortable, tight shoes, or genetics, and are very difficult to treat.
Make sure you do not cut or trim it before you consult your physician. Yet, there are several natural ways to solve the issue and soothe the pain:
Apple Cider Vinegar Wash
Dilute 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar in some lukewarm water, and soak the foot in it to relieve the pain and discomfort.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has powerful disinfectant properties that will instantly soothe the pain. Just rub a few drops on the affected nail.
Floss or a Cotton Ball
Lift the nail a bit using tweezers, and carefully place a sterile cotton ball or floss beneath in order to relieve the pressure and pain.
Warm Epsom Salt Bath
Add Epsom salts to lukewarm water and soak the feet in it for 20 minutes to soften the nails and kill bacteria.
Clean the painful area carefully, and apply antibiotic ointment on the ingrown nail. Cover with a bandage to prevent infections of the tender area.
